Hi,
i got the quake 3 arena cd, and copied Pak0.pk3 to the /usr/local/games/quake3/ folder
downloaded the 1.32b patch and ran it, entered in the root password, however nothing else happens. Nothing pops up, and nothing happens in the terminal.

I think you must follow the quake 3 howto on www.linux-gamers.com , it worked for me.
What command have you used to run the point-release?

i got it to work, i wget the file and it worked. For some reasons firefox has been giving me corrupt downloads.

I had the same issue, except my files wasn't corrupt... when I typed in the root pass nothing happened... then for S&G I tried from a terminal


gib@edge:~$ sudo linuxq3apoint-1.32b.x86.run

and it worked just fine.
