    I did almost the same thing, installed FreeBSD on an old laptop, realised all I had was a wireless card for network access that of course worked immediately in Ubuntu. My BSD career lasted about 30...

    I found Openbox was a good solution for use on my laptop. The interface is basic, but since all I ever seem to do is use firefox for the entire seission 90% of the time it is more than sufficient....
