i'm having the exact same problems as the others.
mine is a BT Voyager 1040 pci card and following the instructions gives the same errors as you described.
i would second this. sounds like a great idea to split ubuntu-desktop virtual package up a little bit. just so i or my mum could give the games a quick uninstall or say bye to the graphics...
worked great for me but i stopped at step 3 as i don't plan on using MPlayer.

you are on a kernel compiled for i386 arch but are on an i686 processor.
you can upgrade to i686 by typing...
sudo apt-get install linux-686
... in the command line for minor (if any)...
if you do it the way explained in this post then it will grab all the dependencies for you when you go to install it.
