You can leave it running, but make sure that the backup file is valid after sbackup has finished - open the tarball with file-roller and see if it's readable:

Are you certain that your external disk isn't formatted as VFAT or FAT? If that is the case, you are in real danger of losing your data... Sbackup can make files...
