    Edgy Art feedback request

    Hi,

I talked to Frank Schoep. He is interested in getting feedback on these two pages :

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Spec...ropose/Results
During the Produce phase, we'll explore each of these three style and looks and decide on which ones are the most promising. I'll now describe each of the three styles and the looks.

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuSounds

Once happy with the main opening theme, I'll create the other sounds to suit. Please off me your suggestions and comments

This will be a sticky for a few days. You can reply with feedback in this thread.

Here's more information about the roadmap for Edgy :
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan

The artwork team defined this process for identifying and completing artwork specifications on time for release :

    update:

    I unstuck this thread.

    from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue13 :

    New Ubuntu theme in Edgy

The Ubuntu artwork team has been hard at work and this week unveiled a new default theme for Ubuntu in Edgy. You can view the new artwork at: [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Spec...CurrentDefault

My personal opinion about sound Sample08:
This one is great. I liked this one best. It should be a little less christmassy and more african. Ubuntu should go for an african themed sound so drums are important.

    Here's the file :

My personal opinion regarding the style/look/background :

I prefer the 'failsafe' look. Its not loud and flashy, and in fact it conveys the stable, secure, mature feeling that newcomers to Ubuntu are looking for (Will this work on MY system with MY data?)

Mat and Gloss looks way classier than the all gloss, although Kubuntu users may like it. Perhaps different looks depending on whether gdm or kdm is booting.

You don't need to cut the bevel on the logo so deeply - this will reduce the 'push button' effect on the heads.

    Why no xubuntu colors?!?

    Sample 03 --- definitely!

I like the MaG look, except for the fact that the logo colors are completely clashing with the background colors. If the logo was black, it would fit better. I'm generally rooting for single color logos as they are much easier to remember.

I like the Rounded theme, because there is only one logo representation. This is a general disadvantage, that there are two logos, the "UBUNTU" and the human circle. Just sticking to one (probably the human circle, as it's small and takes up a square area) would make the image more powerful, but I realize that is probably not up for debate here.

Sounds, I'm afraid, I don't like any of them. They are just too cheesy and campy.

    Hi !!

    about the art:

First of all, how it looks right now is realy nice ! the only thing that I dont like about it is that it does not give me a "new" feeling, it looks to mutch like the old "ubuntu look". But on the other hand, that could be a good thing...

What might be a good thing to do is getting more contrast in it. (not more color). For example the background should contain less collor, so a logo or a login screen gets more attention.

Greetings...and keep up the good work !!

I like this one the most as well. Especially the part where it sound a bit like african drums, it reminds me that 'ubuntu' comes from Africa.

    I like MaG best.

Of the sounds, maybe sample9. It's the most soothing of the bunch.

As a side note, why are the sound clips mp3? Is Edgy getting mp3 support out-of-the box or what?

    Re: Edgy Art feedback request

The sounds ALL remind me a bit of the Vista stuff... a little too airy and ambient sounding IMO. I agree with the comments about it needing to be more african sounding.

As far as the artwork goes, my initial comment is, that I'd really like to see them drop the Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu name on all the graphics, I think the logo itself is fairly representative and it would be nice for people that want to use, for example, the Kubuntu graphics on their Ubuntu install.

For the palettes, I prefer the first Ubuntu palette and teh 2nd Kubuntu one.

I'm not a fan of all the Gloss stuff, but I suppose it's an attempt at saying "modern". Something I think would be kind of cool would be to use something like Who's GDM example for both GDM and the Splash, especially if you can make the transition seem transparent.

    Re: Edgy Art feedback request

*Rounded style* (the giant ubuntu logo in circles style is too distracting and IMO looks kinda silly, failsafe is nice and clean, but it isn't different enough from dapper, IMO artwork is supposed to look edgy too.)

*MaG background/AoG foreground* (Gotta agree with ago on the looks here. The background shouldn't distract, but the foreground really has to stand out, especially that sexy AoG logo )

the pallettes i think either one will look great, but i prefer the darker one.

The sounds IMO are definately lacking, the african sounding one is a step in the right direction. The sounds are too light, and cheesy (synthesized "feel good", bland corporate from the 90's). Try using some recordings of real sounding instruments. I'm a fan of the borealis sound theme,
    quote from page:
The goal of this sound theme is to provide "better feel" through use of the subtle aural notifications. The test I always have in my mind while designing the desktop sounds is to imagine having half-dozen (or more) computer stations in the same office or studio and consider whether their simultaneous use (and resulting desktop sounds) would pose as distraction on users and their productivity. Therefore, in order to minimize the "distraction factor" this theme associates many of the common desktop events with brief, mostly non-pitched, but nonetheless pleasing sound sources (a.k.a. effects).
