Personally, I think the distro doesn't matter. KDE is an application (desktop environment) running on your computer. For the most part, you will not notice a difference.

Things that you will notice in distros, is the way packages are managed, not specific applications. What might be different is the current version that the distro is using.

The distro actually makes a big difference. Kubuntu is slow. Mepis is fast. There are plenty of other distros for which KDE is faster than it is on Kubuntu.

I really like it in mepis. I had freebsd going for a short while with kde, I really liked it with that. Ran great. At the moment Ive replaced freebsd with desktopbsd, same thing but with a better package manager. Well I suppose its the same package manager but the front end for it is better.
In short Id have to say from what Ive used Mepis does kde justice.

    Re: who does kde best?

in the past, i've installed kde-core, but i just installed kubuntu-desktop, instead, and i notice a lot of differences. i'm sure there are different ways to set it up in default, so that was the origin of my question. kde-core, on my laptop, runs much differently from kde on my old desktop, so i'm guessing hardware can be a consideration as well.

btw, i'm liking kubuntu a lot.

    Re: who does kde best?

I would have to say pclinuxos seemed to me to be the best kde out of the box. I really liked there mini versions and they give you a choose of 3 levels of kde. No other distro gives you that many choose's for kde.

I would do edgy/dapper+server+kde-core if i wanted to install kde though. I'm a control freak when it comes to my system and would much rather build it up my way.

    SabayonLinux does KDE the best.

    SimpleMepis does it the worst.

but PC-BSD is pretty damn sweet and gives Linux a stiff competition.
