    Linux Mint Talk

I have no intention of starting a flame war, but I am curious to hear what folks think about Linux Mint 2.0

In particular, assuming you are okay with what they are doing. Is there a downside to using Linux Mint in terms of updates and other package management issues.

Also, how does this differ from Easy Ubuntu or Automatix?

    Thanks for your thoughts

Don't think there's really a downside. The next Ubuntu release will possibly also include the option to easily install flash and codecs, which I hope.
Won't be much use for Linux Mint anymore then I suppose...

It comes with those things OOTB so you do not have to download them. Moreover, the looks are different.

    Re: Linux Mint?

Barbara comes with the following plugins:
    - Macromedia Flash 9 beta
    - Sun Java 1.5 Update 9
    - Realplayer 10

Support for MP3, Windows and various codecs, encrypted DVDs is installed by default.
Is distributing with all of these things included legal?

    Probably the MPAA's lawyers (libdvdcss), Micro$hafts lawyers (w32codecs), Adobe's lawyers(flash), Sun's lawyers(java), and Fraunhoffer's lawyers (or whatever his name was, mp3).

When they start caring things get messy.

    Probably the MPAA's lawyers (libdvdcss),
libdvdcss != DeCSS and was never ruled to be illegal.
    Micro$hafts lawyers (w32codecs)
The only codec MS has rights to is .wma and all of the codecs in that package are distributed at no charge.
    Adobe's lawyers(flash)
You can get it for free from Adobe, it is legal to redistribute it.
    Sun's lawyers(java)
JRE is GPL'ed...... (JDK is part GPL part CDDM)
and Fraunhoffer's lawyers (or whatever his name was, mp3).
The rights to mp3 is owned by Thomson Corporation for one. For two RealPlayer, which is freeware in case you don't know, includes LEGAL mp3 support. Also the mp3 patent is not valid in a very large number of countries.
Since I get asked alot, I am originally from Ukraine but am Russian by nationality. My nick means specter in Russian.
