Howto: set up a mail server in Ubuntu

The how to set up a mail server on a GNU / Linux system guide has been upgraded to breezy from hoary.

It is a complete step by step guide to install, configure and run these packages:
Ubuntu + Postfix + Courier IMAP + MySQL + Amavisd-new + SpamAssassin + ClamAV + SASL + TLS + SquirrelMail+Postgrey

Please discuss in this thread any issues or comments regarding this, the 4th edition.

Specifically the SASL section might need testing, as some of the packages has changed since hoary.

Edition 3, the hoary version, is discussed in this thread . Some issues might have already been discussed in that thread.

Updated the SASL packages so it works perfectly in breezy

flurdy, this all seems pretty cool and all, but I can't set up the shorewall, there's only a shorewall.conf inside the directory, I dunno if I missed something (can't start up the firewall because it says no zones are defined)

I have set this up on my server, however I had hit a small snag. Postfix as of 2.2 I believe, has TLS support built in. However according to Postfix's website, it is turned off by default. Therefore there is no Postfix-tls package in any of the breezy badger repositories. (This sent me for a loop untill I found out it's built in now)

yes, when doing the apt-get with breezy, it will just say there is no need for postfix-tls as long as in the same apt-get you install postfix.

First set your server name, this must match what you put in your domains DNS MX records.

what are my DNS MX records??? I've never heard anything about those

I've set up with this how-to, and have been stopped in the testing. I restart, or start postfix with the init.d and it doesn't show up in netstat... telnet on 25 connects, but doesn't give responses.

How can I make postfix start properly?
